News Series Entry: A Community Within A Community

Credit Greeley Evans School District 6
More than 300 refugee children attend school in Greeley Evans school district 6. Some enter the system not knowing how to hold a pencil or read a book.

Thousands of refugees are moving to the agrarian city of Greeley one hour north of Denver from primary settlement points like Seattle and Minneapolis. In KUNC’s refugee series, reporter Nathan Heffel explores how Greeley's Global Refugee Center helps new arrivals acclimatize to their different surroundings – and how the local school district is handling the influx of refugee students, some of whom have never held a pencil or read a book.
