Google didn't announce the name change, but it didn't have to.

British physicist Stephen Hawking has stepped into a political black hole.

Yelling "Ice cream, ice cream!" in Arabic, the Palestinian man carries a Styrofoam cooler through tangled traffic at the Qalandia checkpoint between Jerusalem and the West Bank city of Ramallah. I roll down my window to signal to him but taste the sting of dissipating tear gas instead.

Israel built a permanent checkpoint at Qalandia after the second Palestinian uprising, or intifada, began in 2000.

Palestinian Prime Minister Fayyad Resigns Post

Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad has resigned, ending a power struggle with President Mahmoud Abbas that rose to new heights in recent months. Fayyad had reportedly tried to quit his job earlier this week; Abbas initially refused it, but he finally accepted the resignation Saturday.

Fayyad, who as the AP reports "enjoys the support of the international community, particularly the United States," had been in the post since 2007.
