"Republican Senate candidate Joe Miller announced late Sunday that he would continue his challenge in federal court of the write-in election of rival Sen. Lisa Murkowski, but added he would not oppose certification of Murkowski's victory by state election officials," the Anchorage Daily News writes.
That should clear the way for Murkowski, who ran as a write-in after Tea Party-favorite Miller defeated her in Alaska's GOP primary, to join her fellow senators when Congress reconvenes Jan. 5.
According to the Daily News, Miller announced last night that while he wasn't going to keep Murkowski from being certified, "he planned to go ahead with his federal lawsuit 'for the sake of the integrity of the election.' "
As Reuters reminds us, "unofficial results showed Murkowski won by more than 10,000 votes, or some 4.5 percent of the total, making hers the first successful write-in campaign waged for a Senate seat since 1954." But Miller has argued that state officials allowed too many potentially questionable write-ins to be counted for the incumbent.
