Storms Cripple Businesses In The South

RENEE MONTAGNE, host:

NPR's business news starts the tornado damage.

(Soundbite of music)

MONTAGNE: The storms in the South hit power supplies hard. A number of car factories and aerospace plants have shut down temporarily, and some coal mines have suspended production.

At a Mercedes Benz plant in Tuscaloosa County, the damage wasn't bad, but the plant is shut today because so many workers have lost power at home and parts suppliers also have power issues.

More broadly, economists say the tornadoes could be a temporary setback to the region, but they're hoping for a boost once rebuilding begins. Transcript provided by NPR, Copyright NPR.
