Hackers Break Into Citigroup's Bank Card Data

LINDA WERTHEIMER, host:

NPR's business news starts with hackers breaking into Citigroup.

(Soundbite of music)

WERTHEIMER: Citigroup says the hackers got data from about one percent of its card accounts. It's not clear whether those are credit or debit card accounts, or both. Citigroup is one of the largest card issuers, with about 21 million accounts in North America. The breach happened in May, but the bank disclosed it only after questioning by the Financial Times newspaper.

Yesterday, the bank revealed that the hackers sought customer's names, email addresses and other contact information. Transcript provided by NPR, Copyright NPR.
