We'll get back to the serious stuff in a bit. But first: After months of speculation, France's first lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy has confirmed that she is with child.

US Magazine reports:

It's about time! Two months after Carla Bruni's father revealed she was pregnant, the 43-year-old French First Lady confirmed the news Friday in an interview with Nice Matin newspaper.

Calling husband Nicolas Sarkozy "the love of my life," Bruni said neither knows of the sex of their unborn child. "There are certain things which one should keep secret," she explained.

Reuters takes a look at the politics of it, reporting that the announcement — one day after Bastille Day and at a time when many French are on holiday at their vacation homes — feels well orchestrated and may play well for Sarkozy's weak poll numbers. Sarkozy is facing a elections next year.

This will be the couple's first child. Bruni has a 9-year-old son and Sarkozy has three.
