Today is the deadline for Colorado cities to bid on hosting a leg of the 2012 USA Pro Cycling Challenge.
The only city that’s guaranteed a stop along next year’s route is Denver, which will once again host the finish. Almost every location from 2011—towns like Aspen, Steamboat Springs and Colorado Springs—will submit bids again.
Meantime, the city of Boulder, which was unsuccessful in 2011, is hoping to make the cut in 2012. Many were surprised that Boulder wasn’t on the list this year given the city’s deep history with road cycling. But Barry Siff, co-chair of the city’s organizing committee, hopes that will change.
“We have the full support of not only the city manager but the entire city council,” he says. “It makes us feel positive about getting the USA Pro Cycling Challenge into the city of Boulder where it really truly belongs.”
At stake is a piece of the estimated $83 million dollars that the Pro Cycling Challenge brought to Colorado during the inaugural event.
Race organizers expect to announce the winning cities by the end of November.
