Global demand for food and fuel is rising, and competition for resources has widespread ramifications. We all eat, so we all have a stake in how our food is produced. Colorado Ag Day Highlights Essential Part of State's Economy

US Dept of Agriculture

Governor John Hickenlooper has declared Wednesday ‘Colorado Ag Day’ as a way to celebrate Colorado’s farmers, ranchers and agricultural producers. Several events are planned, including a lunch at the capitol that will include ingredients fresh from Colorado farms.  The day is about showing appreciation to the farmers, ranchers and producers who make up a large part of the state’s economy, often in ways that go unnoticed.

“Really, if you eat, if you wear clothes, if you drive a car… agriculture is in almost every sector of our lives,” says Christi Lightcap with the Colorado Department of Agriculture.  “This is really a time to thank those producers in Colorado for how they contribute to our lives.”

Colorado’s newly-appointed Agriculture Commissioner John Salazar will speak at tomorrow’s event along with USDA officials, state legislators and others.  The Agriculture Council will donate cash and locally grown food to the Ronald McDonald House of Denver and the Food Bank of the Rockies.  Colorado Ag Day coincides with National Ag week, which wraps up this Saturday.

As the host of KUNC’s new program and podcast In the NoCo, I work closely with our producers and reporters to bring context and diverse perspectives to the important issues of the day. Northern Colorado is such a diverse and growing region, brimming with history, culture, music, education, civic engagement, and amazing outdoor recreation. I love finding the stories and voices that reflect what makes NoCo such an extraordinary place to live.
