Colorado Legislature Examines Child Literacy Laws

KUNC

A bipartisan bill that would recommend third graders repeat the grade if they can’t read, passed a house committee on Monday on a vote of 10 to 3. In an unusual move Governor John Hickenlooper personally testified in support of the bill, but it still faces strong opposition from some in the education community. KUNC’s Bente Birkeland has more from the state capitol.

Bente Birkeland has been reporting on state legislative issues for KUNC and Rocky Mountain Community Radio since 2006. Originally, from Minnesota, Bente likes to hike and ski in her spare time. She keeps track of state politics throughout the year but is especially busy during the annual legislative session from January through early May.
