Court Reverses Stem Cell Decision

Congresswoman Diana DeGette was among many stem-cell research advocates cheering a court ruling on Friday.

In a 2 to 1 decision, a D.C. appeals court reversed a federal judge’s ruling last year to halt federal funding for stem-cell research. DeGette has long championed the use of stem cells for medical research.

“Today’s court ruling puts us well along that road, because not only did the appeals court remove the injunction, but they said that the lawsuit is unlikely to succeed, which would mean the research would be allowed to continue,” says DeGette who’s daughter has Type 1 diabetes. “This this should give researchers some extra measure of comfort.”

But opponents of stem-cell research say the work harms human embryos, and have vowed to press their legal fight.
