Day's Other Major Story: June Jobs Report

Good morning.

As we wait to hear whether Atlantis is still on schedule to launch today on the last mission into space for the space shuttle program, here's a quick look at other stories making headlines.

-- June Jobs Report Due: At 8:30 a.m. ET, the Bureau of Labor Statistics issues its June figures on the nation's unemployment rate and the number of jobs on businesses' payrolls. Reuters says economists are expecting BLS to say that only about 90,000 jobs were added last month, and that the jobless rate stayed at 9.1 percent.

-- Former News Of The World Editor Arrested:"Former News of the World editor Andy Coulson has been arrested by police investigating phone hacking and corruption allegations. It came as [Prime Minister] David Cameron defended his decision to give Mr Coulson a 'second chance' and employ him as his director of communications — a job he has left. The PM announced two inquiries — one led by a judge — into the phone hacking allegations and newspaper ethics." ( BBC News)

-- "Horror In Grand Rapids": "A pleasant Thursday afternoon turned deadly in Grand Rapids [Mich.] when a gunman killed seven people before fleeing through the city, taking three people hostage in a home for hours, then fatally shooting himself." ( Detroit Free Press)

-- "Casey Anthony Sentencing: Court Recalculates, Now Says She Could Leave Jail July 17": After first saying that Casey Anthony would be released next Wednesday, court officials in Florida now say that based on her time served, she'll be freed on July 17. "Jail officials recalculated the date after receiving the signed sentencing order in the afternoon." ( Orlando Sentinel) Found not guilty of killing her two-year-old daughter in a case that drew national attention, 25-year-old Anthony was convicted on four counts of lying to authorities.

-- Spectator Dies At Texas Rangers After Fall; He Reached Out To Catch A Ball: "A fan reaching to catch a ball died after he fell over the left-field wall at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington during the second inning of Thursday night's game. The man had been reaching over the rail for a foul ball tossed into the stands by Rangers left fielder Josh Hamilton during the game against the Oakland A's." ( Dallas Morning News)
