Fern Lake Fire Now 88% Contained; All Evacuations Lifted

National Park Service

Weekend snowfall and colder temperatures this past weekend helped fire crews get a handle on the Fern Lake Fire, which is currently reported at 3,498 acres and 88 percent containment.

Fire managers expect the 4 to 6 inches of snow that fell over the fire area will keep the blaze from spreading further, although it’s likely to continue smoldering for the next few weeks.

Meanwhile all evacuation orders have been lifted. Fire managers and park officials will hold a briefing on current fire conditions, and what residents and visitors can expect in the next few months at a community meeting Monday afternoon at 5 p.m. at the Estes Park Town Hall. [The briefing will be streamed live from the Town of Estes Park's website.]

The fire, which has been burning in Rocky Mountain National Parksince Oct. 9, has destroyed one cabin. The cause remains under investigation, though officials believe it was sparked by an escaped campfire.

As the host of KUNC’s new program and podcast In the NoCo, I work closely with our producers and reporters to bring context and diverse perspectives to the important issues of the day. Northern Colorado is such a diverse and growing region, brimming with history, culture, music, education, civic engagement, and amazing outdoor recreation. I love finding the stories and voices that reflect what makes NoCo such an extraordinary place to live.
