Fire Crews Close to Full Containment on Hewlett Fire

U.S. Forest Service

Fire officials say the Hewlett Fire is nearly contained. The report that the blaze was 85 percent contained came late Saturday night. Earlier in the week it prompted officials to temporarily evacuate about 80 homes.

Lower temperatures and higher humidity helped slow the fire’s spread Saturday. The fire received 1/2" of rain yesterday. Three helicopters are still assigned to the fire today.

The U.S. Attorney's Office says James J. Weber of Fort Collins started the fire with his camp stove on Monday. Authorities say Weber attempted to stomp out the fire but then fled as the blaze spread.

The U.S. Forest Service has issued Weber a citation. He faces a $300 fine but the Forest Service will also pursue him for restitution.
