Five U.S. Troops Killed In Iraq; E. Coli Outbreak Probe Continues

Good morning.

A "tenuous truce," as we just reported, seems to be holding in Yemen. But much uncertainty remains — over whether President Ali Abdullah Saleh will return following his medical treatment in Saudi Arabia and over whether the fractious and heavily armed opposition forces can unite.

Meanwhile, other stories making headlines include:

-- Five U.S. Troops Killed In Iraq: "The U.S. military says five American troops have been killed in central Iraq. The military said in a brief statement that the five were killed on Monday. It gave no additional details about where the incident occurred or how the five died. Iraqi security officials say [it was] a rocket attack ... [on an] Iraqi base in eastern Baghdad on Monday morning [that] killed the five American troops." ( The Associated Press)

-- E. Coli Outbreak Possibly Traced To Sprout Farm In Germany: "A farm in northern Germany has been identified as the most likely source of many of the infections in the E. coli outbreak that has left 22 people dead. The farm, producing bean sprouts, is located in Uelzen, south of Hamburg, the epicenter of the outbreak that has also made more than 2,000 people ill." ( BBC News)

Update at 9:30 a.m. ET:The Associated Press just moved an "alert" that "German officials say initial tests show that sprouts from an organic farm in the country's north are not the cause of the E. coli outbreak."

-- Strauss-Kahn Expected To Plead Not Guilty:"Dominique Strauss-Kahn "will leave his gilded Tribeca cage on Monday to plead not guilty to charges he sexually assaulted a Manhattan maid, his lawyers said. The 62-year-old ex-boss of the International Monetary Fund is set to make his first appearance in Manhattan Supreme Court since being indicted last month by a grand jury." ( New York's Daily News)

-- Santorum Gets Into White House Race: Saying "we're in it to win it," former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum (R) told ABC News' George Stephanopoulos today he's ready to get into the race for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination. ( Good Morning America)

-- Heat Win Game Three; Nadal Takes Sixth French Title: The Miami Heat held on for an 88-86 win over the Dallas Mavericks last night, and took a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven NBA finals. In other sports news from the weekend: Rafael Nadal won his sixth French Open and 10th major tournament, beating Roger Federer; and the Vancouver Canucks took a 2-0 series lead over the Boston Bruins in the Stanley Cup finals.
