Fort Collins Voters to Decide Proposed Medical Marijuana Dispensary Ban

Creative Commons

Fort Collins city councilmembers heard wide-ranging testimony last night on a proposed citizen ballot initiative that would ban medical marijuana dispensaries in town.

The group Concerned Fort Collins Citizens collected thousands of signatures last month in favor of banning medical marijuana dispensaries. At last night’s city council meeting, members could have voted outright to ban the shops. But after hearing testimony, council members decided overwhelmingly to put the issue in front of voters this fall.

Those in favor of the dispensary ban talked about concerns of safety and abuse of the drug by teenagers. Meantime, medical marijuana patients and dispensaries raised concerns about access to the drug, while others wondered if the ban would create more underground medical marijuana growers.

The Fort Collins special election takes place on November 1.
