And let's take a moment to remember the last American veteran of World War I. Frank Buckles was 16 when he decided to enlist. That was too young. Many years later, he told NPR he lied about his age, although he didn't like that word - lie.
Mr. FRANK BUCKLES: I did not lie about it. I misrepresented the age.
INSKEEP: Misrepresented, and Frank Buckles served as a military driver. He eventually was assigned to guard German prisoners. World War I was called the war to end all wars, but Buckles lived long enough to see other conflicts. He was a civilian in Asia when he was imprisoned by the Japanese during World War II. He lived to see an entire era of change before his death on Sunday in West Virginia, at age 110.
