Japanese Take Care Of Each Other Amid Crisis
Writer Pico Iyer has lived in Japan on and off for 23 years. Three weeks after arriving to live at a Zen Temple in Kyoto in 1987, he met his wife, who is Japanese. Iver tells NPR's Guy Raz it was through his wife's family that he came to understand the role of national disaster in Japanese culture and history.
