KUNC Antenna & Tower Work This Week (Updated)

KUNC

[Update 02.02.2012] - Tower crews have finished installing the new sections of tower. However, the upcoming weather has slowed the installation of our rebuilt antenna. We will be returning to 2/3 power on our auxiliary antenna tonight. We hope to have work completed early next week on installing the main antenna. Once that work is completed, we will then return to our full operating power.

Tower crews will be working on repairing our tower & installing our newly repaired main antenna this week. However, these repairs will require KUNC to operate at lower power during the day.

As many of you know, KUNC’s main antenna & tower on Buckhorn Mt sustained severe damage last November from high winds. The damage included loss of 60 feet of KUNC’s 200 foot tower & the loss of a third of our antenna. For several weeks, we operated at greatly reduced power using the damaged antenna. At the end of December, we installed an auxiliary antenna to the undamaged portion of the tower which allowed us to operate at two thirds power.

The next phase of repairs are soon to get underway. Beginning Monday morning (1/30) the tower crew will be on site. They will be stacking the 60 feet of lost tower and mounting KUNC’s permanent main antenna, which will bring us back up to full power operation once completed. For the safety of the tower crew, KUNC will need to operate at reduced power while the work is being done. If the weather holds, it should be completed in three or four days. Low power operation will commence around 10 AM Monday morning and will continue until the work is completed.

We apologize for any inconvenience this work may cause. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me, send in a comment to comment@kunc.org, or leave a comment below in the comments section. Thank you very much for your patience and understanding.
