Google Honors Guitar Legend Les Paul

RENEE MONTAGNE, host:

Our last word in business is one costly guitar riff.

(Soundbite of guitar)

More than 700 million people became spontaneous musicians when they visited Google's home page last week. Google had transformed its logo into a guitar. You could actually strum.

STEVE INSKEEP: It was posted for two days to honor guitar legend Les Paul. The company spent about $15,000 on the design, but the website Extreme Text says the plethora of plucking, the time spent plucking, cost the world $268 million in lost productivity.

MONTAGNE: And that time waster is here to stay. Google has given the guitar a permanent online home, and there's a link on Morning Edition's Facebook page.

(Soundbite of laughter).

MONTAGNE: Knock yourselves out.

INSKEEP: You know, see if we can get it up over $300 million of lost productivity. That's the business news on MORNING EDITION from NPR News. I'm Steve Inskeep.

MONTAGNE: And I'm Renee Montagne. Transcript provided by NPR, Copyright NPR.
