U.S. To Allow Import Of Korean Penguin Cartoon

MARY LOUISE KELLY, host:

Our last word in business today penguin politics.

People in South Korea have been upset by reports that the U.S. planned to ban the entry of one of their most beloved citizens. His name is Pororo. He's a cartoon penguin, a blue bespectacled penguin and he wears and aviators hat.

STEVE INSKEEP, host:

He has mesmerized kids in Korea and more than 100 other countries.

INSKEEP: Certainly, that's an eyeful. Now the producers want to bring the series to the United States, but their desire raised concerns over the penguin's connections to North Korea. Turns out, some of the production was in past years, outsourced to North Korea animators. The United States bans imports from the Communist North.

KELLY: Well, never fear. U.S. Treasury officials have now decided the cartoon is not subject to an import ban and they say the penguin will have no trouble flying - maybe make that waddling - through U.S. customs.

That's the business news on MORNING EDITION from NPR News. I'm Mary Louise Kelly.

INSKEEP: And I'm Steve Inskeep.
