No More Freebies: Fort Collins’ MAX Bus To Start Charging

August 23 marks the last day of free rides along the Fort Collins bus rapid transit system. Starting August 25, the city will begin charging riders $1.25 for trips along the Mason Street corridor.

The free period between the system’s May 10 launch and now was an attempt to introduce residents to the bus service—which is now seeing work commuters and weekend traffic.

Spokeswoman Denise White explains that the ticket collection process is different on Fort Collins’ bus rapid transit compared to other Transfort buses.

“You have your ticket, and get on the MAX at any of the three doors. We have transit service officers that will randomly check for valid fares on MAX buses. As long as you have your ticket, you’re good to go,” she said.

Fort Collins will have staff on hand to help passengers work the new ticket machines.

The bus rapid transit systemruns every 10 minutes along the 5-mile Mason Corridor from downtown Fort Collins to the South Transit Center Monday through Saturday.

It’s the first such bus route to launch along the Front Range. An 18-mile system is expected to launch between along the U.S. 36 corridor in early 2016.
