Occupy Protesters Mark May Day in Denver
Several hundred Occupy Denver protesters marched from Civic Center Park through the city’s Capitol Hill neighborhood this afternoon as part of a national effort of marches and rallies to mark May Day.
Protesters marched with a police escort chanting slogans like "Whose streets, our streets," and held signs that ranged from "We are the 99%" to "Groceries or Gas? Thanks Obama."
Toward the back of the crowd was Adrian Wilson of Denver, who said the system has to change fundamentally.
"If we all empower ourselves, then we can change the system," he said. " We can change this for the better and make it not focused on war, on military, on prisons and we can make it more community-oriented."
Wilson said the local occupy movement had a productive winter after last fall's protests and overnight camps, adding there has been a lot of underground organizing and committee meetings that he says will strengthen the movement coming into summer.
