Wednesday was a momentous day for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered community in Colorado. The state began legally recognizing their relationships with civil unions.
There was a high turnout and a lot of excitement at the Denver clerk and recorders office in the early morning hours Wednesday. The department reported granting 114 civil unions from midnight until 5:30 a.m.
KUNC's Nathan Heffel witnessed the first Colorado civil union just after midnight in Denver.
The Boulder County clerk and recorders office also opened it's doors early Wednesday morning.

The total number of civil union licenses issued Wednesday varies by county.
- Boulder County: 67 licenses granted - 48 of those were issued from midnight until 2:15 a.m.
- Denver County: 152 licenses granted - 114 of issued between midnight and 5:30 a.m.
- Larimer County: 30 licenses
- Weld County: 6 licenses
