Until now, the Pikes Peak highway has only been open to cyclists during organized rides.
After the success of a trial program in September of this year, officials have decided to open the 19-mile road year around to bicyclists.
“We know avid cyclists from the Pikes Peak Region and around the world will come to experience the challenge and beauty that Pike’s Peak - America’s Mountain has to offer,” says Karen Palus, City Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Director.
Cyclists will be required to sign a use agreement and liability waiver available at the Pikes Peak Highway tollage. Those under the age of 18 will need to be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
The regular $10 admission fee will be charged to cyclists to use the highway that runs from Cascade to the summit of Pikes Peak at 14,115 ft. They will also have the option to buy a Pikes Peak-America’s Mountain pass.
The Pikes Peak Highway will officially open to bicyclists on Jan. 1, 2013.
