Two quick updates on Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ), who continues to recover from the severe injuries she received in the Jan. 8 shooting rampage at an event she was holding in Tucson, Ariz.:
-- She is "able to laugh at jokes, recognize visitors and even offer a poignant response when asked recently by her husband how she was doing. 'Better,' Giffords said, in one of the first words she uttered since being shot in the head Jan. 8. Family friend Tilman Fertitta described the encounters to The Associated Press."
-- "After three weeks of therapy, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords is sleeping through the night, eating sushi, participating in simple conversations and making steady progress in her recovery from a gunshot wound through the brain, her doctors and those close to her say. ... [And] Giffords knows that she was shot and that there was 'a traumatic event,' said Pia Carusone, Giffords' chief of staff. However, she does not yet know about the deaths and injuries to others, nor has she indicated that she wants to know more about that day, Carusone said." ( The Arizona Republic)
Six people were killed and another 13, including Giffords, were shot during the attack by a lone gunman.
Update at 10:10 a.m. ET: Over at It's All Politics, NPR's Ken Rudin suggests that those who are already talking about Giffords running for the Senate in 2012 ought to stop such speculation.
