RTD Launches 13 Month Northwest Mobility Study

Denver’s Regional Transportation District is kicking off a study of transportation needs in Northern Colorado and they’re looking for public input.

RTD’s Northwest Area Mobility Study will explore transportation needs in communities like Boulder, Lafayette, Louisville and Broomfield.

A public telephone town hall will be held Wednesday from 6:30-7:30 p.m. with area stakeholders. The public will be invited to call in and RTD says 50,000 phone numbers in the region will also be called and invited to participate. The goal is to inform the public and provide a forum for questions or comments.

RTD says the 13 month study will research a list of projects to improve transportation in the region including a phased construction of the FasTracks Northwest Rail Line, Bus Rapid Transit on US 36 from Denver to Boulder, the feasibility of a new Bus Rapid Transit system to Longmont via Broomfield as well as studying the reverse-commute between Denver’s Union Station and US 36.

Commuter rail to Longmont from Denver has long been planned as a solution to increasing traffic on area highways, however RTD says under current FasTracks funding the earliest it would be completed is 2044.

Recent studies have also looked at creating a high speed rail system along the Front Range. High speed trains would travel from Pueblo north through Denver and end in Fort Collins.  There’s also the possibility of extending high speed rail service into the mountains to Eagle via the I-70 corridor. The cost of the entire project would be in the billions of dollars and provide inter-city travel at speeds up to 147 miles per hour.

To dial into Wednesday’s town hall call 1-877-299-8403 and Enter ID code: 19081.

Update 6/20 9:04 a.m.: Callers attempting to dial into Wednesday's town hall were unable to do so due to an incorrectly published phone number by RTD. With minutes left to go in the meeting, RTD tweeted the correct number: 877-229-8493. Residents who were called directly by RTD were able to listen in on the meeting.  According to the Daily Camera, the town hall will be available on RTD's website by next week.
