"South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard (R) signed a law Tuesday requiring women to wait three days after meeting with a doctor to have an abortion, the longest waiting period in the nation," The Associated Press reports.
As South Dakota's Argus Leader has reported, the law is expected to be challenged in court.
And as The Wall Street Journal 's Law Blog wrote this week, the action in South Dakota is part of a national trend: " Roe v. Wade, which barred states from prohibiting certain types of abortions, has served as the law of the land for nearly 40 years. Still, anti-abortion activists are mounting new challenges to the law, putting forth new state bills that seem, at least on their face, to run up against the law laid down by Roe."
Also this week, NPR's Liz Halloran looked at the push to "defund" Title X, which for more than four decades "has subsidized family planning programs that provide contraceptive and related health and family services to millions of low-income women and men. ... It makes no funds available for abortion."
