Colorado is listed among the top twenty states that could have the greatest consumer cost savings under new fuel standards announced this summer by President Barack Obama. That’s according to a new reportreleased on Wednesday by the Natural Resources Defense Council and the Union of Concerned Scientists.
Brendan Bell is the Senior Washington Representative for UCS. He says $44.3 billion would be saved nationally with a 54.5 MPG standard by 2025.
“This agreement has broad support from the auto industry, the united auto workers, clean car states and a range of consumer and national security, business and environmental organizations. Basically, if you fall anywhere on the political spectrum between General Motors and the Sierra Club – you think that these standards make sense.”
In Colorado the annual cost savings at the pump are estimated at $370.00 per household. But Congressman Darrel Issa (R-CA) – who chairs the House oversight committee – says the new standards would not be good for the economy or consumers. He’s called for a hearing on the topic next week. As a result the President’s fuel standards that were set to take effect this month probably won’t be adopted until November.
