Summer Music

LINDA WERTHEIMER, host: Perhaps you'll put on a little summer music to pair with that Riesling.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "HOT FUN IN THE SUMMERTIME")

SLY & THE FAMILY STONE: (Singing) And every spring I wish she comes back. Hi. Hi. Hi. Hi, there...

WERTHEIMER: Listeners visited our Facebook page and posted a full playlist of hot-weather songs, most of them from decades past. Like "Hot Fun in the Summertime" by Sly & the Family Stone. Other songs that kept showing up include this tune from DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "SUMMERTIME")

DJ JAZZY JEFF AND THE FRESH PRINCE: (Rapping) And think of the summers of the past, adjust the bass and let the Alpine blast. Pop in my CD and let me run a rhyme. And put your car on cruise and lay back 'cause this is summertime. Summertime, summer, summer, summertime...

WERTHEIMER: Some of you shared music of your teenage summers. Allison Crean's song was the "Stuck in the Middle with You" by Stealers Wheel.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "STUCK IN THE MIDDLE WITH YOU")

STEALERS WHEEL: (Singing) Well, I don't know why I came here tonight. I got the feeling that something ain't right. I'm so scared in case I fall off my chair, and I'm wondering how I'll get down the stairs. Clowns to the left of me. Jokers to the right. Here I am, stuck in the middle with you

WERTHEIMER: She writes: I remember listening to it with the wind blowing through my hair in my first car, on the way to high school graduation.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "SPINNING WHEELS")

BLOOD, SWEAT AND TEARS: (Singing) What goes up must come down. Spinning wheel got to go round... Talking about your troubles it's a crying shame. Ride a painted pony, let the spinning wheel...

WERTHEIMER: In 1969, "Spinning Wheel" by Blood, Sweat & Tears became Mark Frazier's summer song. He writes about noticing all the teen girls at the public swimming pool. Lots of damp quarters in the jukebox kept the "Spinning Wheel" 45 spinning.

The B-52's song "Rock Lobster" helped Katherine Taylor and her friends pass the hot, long summers in the Central Valley. She writes: We would stay inside to stay cool and I would dance around with my high school friends singing...

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "ROCK LOBSTER")

THE B-52S: (Singing) Somebody went under a dock and there they saw a rock. It wasn't a rock. It was a rock lobster.

WERTHEIMER: Rock lobsters are from Australia, I think, where it's winter now. So hold that thought.

We didn't get to The Kinks, The Cars or The 1812 Overture, but thanks for sending them in and keep listening.
