As Temperatures Increase, Open State Park Camp Sites Decrease

Coloardo Department of Natural Resources

As the weather warms, many people are putting those snow shovels away and looking ahead to their camping vacations. Some Colorado state park camp grounds are already booked solid for the major spring and summer holidays.

More than 12 million people visit Colorado’s 42 state parks each year. And demand for the over 4,000 park camp sites is high.  Debbie Frazier with Colorado Parks and Wildlife says camp site reservations are going fast. If you want to camp at one of the major parks over Memorial Day, Fourth of July or Labor Day, you might be out of luck.

But, she says there are other less frequented parks that still have plenty of availability.

“If you can’t find someplace at the park you want to go to, we suggest trying another park. They just have wonderful landscapes, great activities for kids, and lots of outdoor recreational opportunities at every park.”

Frazier says cabins and even yurts, a unique round tent on a circular wood frame, are available for reservation at many of the parks. But, those too are quickly being booked up as the continued warm weather encourages retreat to the great outdoors.

The state has set up an online system for making reservations.
