The U.S. Department of Transportation is granting the Fort Collins-Loveland Airport $220,000 for a program that could shorten security line wait times.Called Wingless Flight, the program would screen passengers at the Northern Colorado airport, and bus them to a concourse at DIA. They could then go directly to their gates. The idea was first announced last summer by the U.S. Department of Transportation, and would be one of the first in the country.
“It will be not only an innovative approach but a green approach,” says Airport Director Jason Licon. “We’ll take a lot of cars off the interstate that are traveling [to the airport].”
According to a 2009 market analysis survey cited by the Coloradoan newspaper, about 160,000 people in Northern Colorado drive to DIA each year.
While one half of the grant will go to developing the Wingless Flight program, Licon says the other half will be spent on research that could bring more commercial flights to the Northern Colorado airport.
