In southern Colorado, I-25 between Trinidad and Raton, New Mexico remains closed as firefighters battle an out-of-control blaze that’s threatening some 300 structures in the area.
The Track Fire has more than tripled in size and has quickly spread from north of Raton into Colorado. It’s also forced numerous evacuations.
Rosemary Ragsdale has been out of her home since early Monday morning. She's staying with her sister who runs a motel in Raton.
"The air is like you’re at a regular campfire, you know it smells like wood burning, like a campfire would smell, it’s all over town, it’s hazy," Ragsdale told KUNC.
Meantime, firefighters appear to be getting the upper hand on several other blazes burning further north toward Pueblo.
Southern Colorado has not benefited from the spring rains hitting the northern reaches of the state, and fire officials say the threat for more large wildfires there is extremely high.
