Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park is now open for the summer season. This isn’t the only mountain roadway opening almost two weeks ahead of schedule.

Trail Ridge Road closes by late October and spends half the year covered with ice and snow. It's normally reopened by Memorial Day weekend. But, officials say because of the mild winter this year, the road needed less repair and maintenance crews were able to start working earlier.

In 2011, heavy snowstorms forced the road to remain close until June 6th. The earliest the road has ever been opened was May 7 of 2002, the year Colorado experienced a drought.
