Police estimated that about 2,000 extra people showed up to the Hollywood premiere of Electric Daisy Carnival Experience,a documentary about a rave. What was supposed to be an invite-only event quickly overflowed Grauman's Chinese Theatre and the crowd spilled onto the streets.
The AP reports that soon turmoil erupted as people threw bottles and vandalized cars. The Los Angeles Times reports others "planked," lying down in the middle of the street, and some witnesses reported others dancing on top of police cruisers taunting them.
Police donned their riot gear and fired beanbags into the crowd to disperse it.
And all of this may have been caused by a single tweet. The Times explains:
About 2:30 p.m., DJ Kaskade, whose real name is Ryan Raddon, took to Twitter and told his more than 90,000 followers that he was heading to the theater for a block party.
"Let's see if the magic of social networking will work today," he tweeted. He followed that with: "ME+BIG SPEAKERS+MUSIC=BLOCK PARTY!!!"
But as the night went on, the DJ's tweets weren't as festive.
"News choppers overhead," he tweeted. "The man trying to shut us down. Hang on I am coming!!! This is crazy."
And later, "EVERYONE CHILL NOW!!! The block party has officially been shut down! BUT THIS IS TOO CRAZY AND WE NEED TO BE SAFE!"
And even later, "EVERYONE NEEDS TO GO HOME NOW! I DON'T WANT THIS TO REFLECT BADLY ON EDM OR WHAT WE ARE ABOUT. BE RESPECTFUL AND CHILL OUT!!!"
