Understanding The U.S. Position On Egypt
For several days now, the United States has been publicly calling for Egypt to hold free and fair elections — the "sooner the better" is the official line. In private, the U.S. reportedly has been talking with Egyptian officials about a plan for Mubarak to leave office immediately and hand over power to his newly named vice president, Omar Suleiman.
