Unions across Colorado are rallying today as part of a national effort to remember the 43rd anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s assassination.

Gatherings in and around Denver today include marches on the capitol and candlelight vigils. Other events are planned around the state, including in Longmont, Boulder, Colorado Springs, Pueblo and Greeley.

“We planned this event (to be) very much two-sided,” says Lesley Manring, a professor at the University of Northern Colorado’s School of Music and one of the Greeley event’s organizers.  “Primarily to honor Dr. King - and to remind people that Dr. King died trying to help laborers, sanitation workers in Memphis.”

Speakers at the northern Colorado event will include several area pastors, state labor leaders and professors speaking about the history of the labor movement in the U. S.  The ‘We Are One’ rally is planned for 5 – 6:30 p. m. in Greeley’s Centennial Park.

As the host of KUNC’s new program and podcast In the NoCo, I work closely with our producers and reporters to bring context and diverse perspectives to the important issues of the day. Northern Colorado is such a diverse and growing region, brimming with history, culture, music, education, civic engagement, and amazing outdoor recreation. I love finding the stories and voices that reflect what makes NoCo such an extraordinary place to live.
