USDA Grant to Benefit Denver Urban Gardens

Denver Urban Gardens

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has announced $725,000 in grants to support 10 community garden programs across the country—including one in Colorado.

Denver Urban Gardens, which helps the underserved cultivate fresh fruits and vegetables will receive $70,000. Spokesperson Abbie Harris says the money will help create 14 new community gardens in lower-income neighborhoods in the Denver metro area. In each case, she says it’s not the organization, but rather people in each community that will get the growing started.

“They’re growing food for their families and in doing so they’re improving their neighborhoods,” she says. “They have these beautiful, safe and productive spaces in what’s sometimes a pretty severe environment.”

The idea behind the USDA’s People’s Garden Grant Program is to reduce the number of food insecure areas across the U.S.—particularly in poverty stricken areas.

In addition to Colorado, projects were funded in Connecticut, Arizona California and five other states.
