Watchdog Group Issues Call to Action on High Gas Prices, Criticizing Rep. Gardner

Creative Commons

The watchdog group Taxpayers for Common Sense Action is launching an Internet ad campaign against Republican 4th Congressional District Representative Cory Gardner. At issue is Gardner’s neutral stance on tax subsidies for oil and gas companies. The ads will appear on web sites for the Denver Post, Grand Junction Daily Sentinel and the Pueblo Chieftain. They focus on rising gas prices, and feature House Speaker John Boehner and House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, who have both supported ending the breaks for oil companies.

Jill Lancelot, co-founder of Taxpayers for Common Sense, says Rep. Gardner needs to be held accountable for what he promised on the campaign trail.

“He talks about cutting wasteful spending. Here we are with a lot of wasteful spending,  and a very profitable industry,” she said. “This is where we ought to be looking.”

So far Gardner has not said whether he would support action to repeal the tax breaks. Last week he sent a letter to President Barack Obama, asking the administration release a detailed plan to lower gas prices.
