    The Pixies join host David Dye on this episode of World Cafe Words and Music from WXPN. Debuting in 1987, they became indie icons with albums like Surfer Rosa and Doolittle before going on a twelve-year hiatus. Last year, The Pixies recorded new music that has so far been released on two EPS. We'll hear some of those songs live, as well as old hits, and they discuss the recent departure of original bassist, Kim Deal.

After nearly a decade together, it was their recent show-stopping performance in the documentary Another Day, Another Time that captured wide-spread attention. They released a new album, Bad Self Portraits, just last month, and today Lake Street Dive play live and recall their start as jazz students.

Lead singer-songwriter Alynda Lee Segarra left her Bronx home at age 17 to ride the rails across the country before landing in New Orleans. Now, her band has released their debut Americana album, Small Town Heroes. In this episode, Hurray For The Riff Raff perform live and Segarra talks about her unconventional musical education.

Ivan Neville, son of Aaron Neville, originally formed the band for a New Orleans Jazz Fest appearance, but they've continued playing together for a decade. As explained in today's interview, Dumpstaphunk worked with guests like Flea from Red Hot Chili Peppers and Ani DiFranco on their new album, plus we'll hear live songs from Dirty Word.

Two venerable entities, Del McCoury and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, were both introduced to the world in 1963. Since then, both have brought their particular brands of roots music around the world — bluegrass for McCoury and New Orleans jazz for the Preservation Hall Jazz Band.

Villagers On World Cafe

A lot has happened for Villagers' Conor O'Brien since he released his debut record in May last year. Becoming a Jackal landed on several "Best of" lists for 2010, was nominated for the Mercury Prize and topped the charts in his home country of Ireland. Not bad, considering that O'Brien played virtually everything on the record and did the album artwork by himself. The guy's got talent, and people are noticing.

Fountains Of Wayne On World Cafe

Fountains of Wayne has been churning out catchy power pop since the mid-'90s. After the singles "Radiation Vibe" and "Sink to the Bottom" put Adam Schlesinger and Chris Collingwood on the national map, the band was catapulted into the mainstream spotlight with its 2003 hit, "Stacy's Mom," which earned them Best New Artist and Best Vocal Performance Grammy nominations.

Tim Robbins, the actor, screenwriter, director and activist, now adds "musician" to his already-impressive roster of successes. He has just released a self-titled record from his band, Tim Robbins and the Rogues Gallery Band, which was produced by Hal Wilner, former producer of Saturday Night Live.

The members of the freak-rock carnival known as Man Man — Honus Honus, Pow Pow, Chang Wang, Turkey Moth, and Jefferson — are back with their fourth full-length album, Life Fantastic. On it, Honus Honus (the "anti-stage name" of Ryan Kattner) sings of picnicking corpses, deranged killers and tormented relationships amid marimbas, Chinese funeral horns, and pots and pans — a fanciful weirdness to complement the pitch black imagery.
