We'll hear some of her lo-fi music and witty lyrics in a live performance today, and Barnett will talk about the stories in her songs, which all come from true events.

    The Pixies join host David Dye on this episode of World Cafe Words and Music from WXPN. Debuting in 1987, they became indie icons with albums like Surfer Rosa and Doolittle before going on a twelve-year hiatus. Last year, The Pixies recorded new music that has so far been released on two EPS. We'll hear some of those songs live, as well as old hits, and they discuss the recent departure of original bassist, Kim Deal.

Lead singer-songwriter Alynda Lee Segarra left her Bronx home at age 17 to ride the rails across the country before landing in New Orleans. Now, her band has released their debut Americana album, Small Town Heroes. In this episode, Hurray For The Riff Raff perform live and Segarra talks about her unconventional musical education.

Of Montreal On World Cafe

Of Montreal is a band with a history as rich as it is eclectic. The band was formed in 1997 by singer Kevin Barnes, who pieced the group together with the help of local musicians in his hometown of Athens, Ga.

Since forming, the group has released 10 albums, the most recent being 2010's False Priest. The band found critical acclaim with 1999's The Gay Parade, which was called "indie pop's very own Sgt. Pepper" by Allmusic.com.

With its eight members calling diverse music scenes (New York, Sacramento and Portland) home, !!! is a dance-punk band that isn't afraid to get down and dirty — and also isn't afraid to mix things up. Pronounced "chk chk chk", this group has been on the radar of fans and critics alike since 2000, with the release of their eponymous debut. Taking their name from the movie The Gods Must Be Crazy, the !!! stand for Bushmen's clicking--though band members say that the three exclamation marks can stand for three sounds of any kind, such as Pow Pow Pow, Bam Bam Bam, or Uh Uh Uh.

A band that joyfully celebrates and preserves the heart of Americana music, David Wax Museum has quickly warmed the ears of thousands. David Wax and Suz Slezak bridges Mexican folk with country, Americana and rock. The release of their sophomore album, Carpenter Bird (2009), placed the group on everyone's radar, and with good reason.

Bobby Long On World Cafe

English singer-songwriter Bobby Long has been writing keenly crafted pop songs since he was a teenager, and soon began attending university and performing at open-mic nights alongside future Twilight star Robert Pattinson. That connection paid off, as Long was chosen to perform a song with Pattinson for the film series' first soundtrack.

Iron And Wine On World Cafe

Sam Beam, better known by his stage name Iron and Wine, released his first album, The Creek Drank The Cradle, on the Sub Pop label back in 2002. He wrote, performed, recorded and produced every track by himself at a studio in his home.
