World Cafe

Throughout the month of October, we celebrated the 20th anniversary of World Cafe by revisiting some of the best and most memorable interviews of the past 20 years.

Ryan Adams announced a hiatus from music in 2009 after suffering from Ménière's disease, an inner-ear disorder that causes vertigo and progressive hearing loss, but the North Carolina alt-country staple never really left. Through various monikers and channels, Adams released rations of black metal and hard rock, giving select performances throughout 2009 and 2010. He has now returned to form with Ashes & Fire, an album that'll feel familiar to fans of his work with his former band, The Cardinals.

Peter Gabriel's 12th studio album, New Blood, contains re-imaginings of some of his best-known songs — including "Solsbury Hill," "Red Rain" and "Don't Give Up" — using orchestral arrangements and ambient sound. The album continues a career reinvention he began on Scratch My Back, a covers album with the attached expectation that the covered artists would reciprocate.

Though Annie Clark began as a member of Sufjan Stevens' touring band and The Polyphonic Spree, those experiences do little to explain the incredible things that happen on Strange Mercy, her third album under the moniker St. Vincent. As if unleashed from the constraints of her previous work, Clark straight-up shreds.

As labelmates and tour companions, San Francisco's Vetiver and Chicago's Fruit Bats have strong ties to one another.
