Visitation at Rocky Mountain National Park was up slightly last year to 3,229,618. That’s about 2 percent higher than 2011 figures. Park Spokeswoman Kyle Patterson says the increase is partially due to a change in how traffic is tracked.
The Foundation for Colorado State Parks, a 501(c)(3) organization, is pioneering an effort to attract corporate sponsors to Colorado's state parks. The proposal is in the early stages of development but officials say it could be implemented by 2013.
As the weather warms, many people are putting those snow shovels away and looking ahead to their camping vacations. Some Colorado state park camp grounds are already booked solid for the major spring and summer holidays.
A House Committee will hear testimony this afternoon on a proposed merger between the Colorado Division of Wildlife and Colorado State Parks.
The move requires approval from both the House and Senate, which passed the measure in April. Proponents say that it would makes services more efficient, and could save the state up to $3 million every year.
