Anthony Weiner's Political Sin: Picked Bad Time To Be Big Distraction

Rep. Anthony Weiner couldn't exit the scene fast enough for Democrats and didn't.

Initially after the scandal of his lewd tweets to at least six young women broke, he said he wasn't quitting. Then with increasing pressure for his resignation, he appeared to try to buy time by letting it be known that he was entering rehab.

In the end, however, he was only able to get two weeks past Memorial Day weekend when the scandal went public before the pressure became so irresistible that he would be forced on Thursday to announce his resignation.

Reports: Rep. Weiner To Resign Today

June 6, 2011: Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY) admits to having numerous sexual relationships online.

Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY) plans to resign from congress today, according to reports from several news outlets.

The news broke a short time ago when The New York Times sent out an alert that Weiner "has told friends that he plans to resign his seat." It cited "a person told of Mr. Weiner's plans" as its source.

Weiner Has Supporters, But District Might Leave Him

Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY) has few friends in Washington these days. But a new poll shows that a majority of the his constituents in Queens and Brooklyn want him to stay in office, even after the revelation that he sent lewd photos of himself to young women over the Internet, and then lied about it. The poll also suggests that many of Weiner's constituents would vote for him again — if they get the chance.

New York Times: Anthony Weiner's Wife Is Pregnant

Citing three unnamed sources, the New York Times is reporting that Huma Abedin, Rep. Anthony Weiner's wife, is expecting the couple's first child:

Ms. Abedin, 35, is in the early stages of pregnancy, according to three people with knowledge of the situation.

Rep. Weiner Admits Lying, Sending Lewd Photo, Inappropriate Conversations

Saying that "I have made terrible mistakes and have hurt the people I care about the most," a tearful Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY) just admitted lying about a lewd photo he sent to a young woman and to having "inappropriate conversations" over social media and on the phone with "six women over the last three years."

He also said he is not going to resign from office.
