Air Force C-130’s equipped with the Modular Airborne Fire Fighting System will continue to fight western wildfires. To date, they have dropped over 1.2 million gallons of fire retardant according to the U.S. Forest Service.
It’s unclear how a new defense strategy and cuts outlined by President Barack Obama will affect 27,000 soldiers at Fort Carson Army Post outside of Colorado Springs. Details are expected in the coming weeks about how the changes will impact Colorado.
The U.S. Northern Command, created to defend the American homeland in the wake of the 9/11 attacks, is on a higher level of vigilance after the death of Osama bin Laden. On Monday the command moved up one step to the third-highest out of five military alert levels.
