Carie Lemack, 36, gave up a long time ago trying to make sense of the Sept. 11 attacks that killed her mother, Judy Larocque.

"That's not possible," Lemack says.

But she says she will never quit trying to prevent that kind of tragedy from ever happening again.

Ten years after her mother's unfathomable death, Lemack is on a mission that's taken her down a road she also never could have imagined.

Bev Marquez, a licensed professional counselor and the Operations Director at Metro Crisis Services in Denver, was one of a number of mental health professionals from across the country at Ground Zero immediately after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.  She talks with KUNC's Erin O'Toole about how the field of crisis counseling has changed since then, and offers suggestions on how to deal with fears and unwanted emotions that may resurface.

When planes hit the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001, Father Mychal Judge ran into the North Tower alongside the firemen he served. Not long after, he became the first recorded victim of the terrorist attacks.

But 10 years later, his friends and colleagues remember Judge as vividly in death as they knew him in life: a gregarious, irreverent man wholly devoted to God, whom many considered a saint, in large part because of his own personal struggles.
