Fire danger looms large at Garden of the Gods Park. Colorado Springs officials have had to work hard to convince visitors that while the park may be in fire danger, it wasn't burnt by the Waldo Canyon Fire.
It has been almost two months since the country saw the devastating pictures of the Mountain Shadows subdivision burning outside of Colorado Springs. Those images drove down lodging numbers 13.3 percent in July according to a recent Rocky Mountain Lodging Report. Today as the seven-day USA Pro Cycling Challenge rolls through Waldo Canyon into town officials hope a new image will emerge.
When the Waldo Canyon Fire roared over the hill behind the Mountain Shadows neighborhood in Colorado Springs, Colo., in June, nearly350 homes were destroyed. The blaze reduced this affluent neighborhood at the foot of the mountains to rubble.
C.J. Moore's home on Mirror Lake Court was among the casualties. The inferno was so hot, her stone driveway exploded. Only a few blackened trees sway eerily in the wind where her home used to stand.
