Across many parts of Colorado, recent rains and flooding have left behind ample breeding grounds for mosquitoes, and health concerns are growing after Boulder County officials reported the first human case of West Nile virus this week. Many cities and counties are trying to strike a balance between protecting the public and their bottom line.

As temperatures heat up, public health officials are warning Coloradans to take preventive steps against mosquito bites, which could lead to West Nile Virus.

Citing budget constraints, public health officials in Jefferson County say they’re cutting a spraying program that prevents the mosquito responsible for carrying West Nile Virus from breeding.
